Hello families and students, as we enter this new situation we are going to embark on some online learning. This by no means replaces the classroom, but will hopefully bridge the gap until we are back in the classroom learning together. My plan is to post new activities each week, I will post on Wednesdays because I like a Wednesday to Wednesday week. This is new to all of us, so please let me know what I can be doing to help. If you haven't already done so, please make sure to send me your baby pictures, pictures of your activities during Covid-19, and any pictures you have of your times at Hepworth Elementary. We are beginning to wind down the year. If you only do one more thing all school year, make sure it is your letter-to-self!! You will be very glad you did it four years from now!
We are going to start our math review so I am going to be posting more challenging problems in our virtual classroom on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Let me know if you have any questions and we will find a way to figure it out.

Good morning Grade 8s. It is wonderful to see some good weather coming up. Hopefully we can enjoy the sunshine and better temperatures. I am sure many of you heard of the announcement that made it official that we won't be back to school until June. I am heartbroken knowing that our time in the classroom together is over. I have loved being your teacher and wish we got more time together. We will definitely be getting together for a Graduation night when this is all over.
You will always be my student, and can always reach out to me if you need anything.

Your writing could be a 5 paragraph essay if you want to do some additional research, or you could submit a shorter piece of writing as your assignment.

I apologize for the "Problem of the Day" issues last week, the website was giving me fits until I downloaded a new web browser to use. Should be back to normal now.

The forecast is calling for another beautiful weekend, so please get outside and try to enjoy the sunshine. If you do anything exciting or complete a project at home don't forget to send pictures to your teacher!

Getting Started
- From the main page you can make an account (it is free, and easy) so that you can save your progress. If you would rather play as a guest that is okay too.
- Choose "mobiles" and then "play"
- There are 200 hundred puzzles broken into three categories, "Explorer", "Puzzler" and "Master"
- Start in Explorer until you get the hang of it, then you can progress to find the puzzles that aren't too easy and aren't too hard.
- The task is to balance the mobiles by figuring out how much each shape is worth. Play around a little and if you are struggling let me know and I will help you get rolling.
Task
- Solve the highest number puzzle you can and either take a screenshot of your answer or take a picture of your screen to share with me. ** Don't just jump to number 200, it will be too difficult. Work up and as you complete puzzles you will get better at it.
- Create 2 puzzles of your own, by choosing "build." Your puzzles need to balance and have at least 3 different shapes of different values.

Find someone at home to play with, or play alone. Flip two cards over and add or subtract the two numbers. Every black card represents a positive number. Every red cards represents a negative number. In other words a black seven is worth +7 (seven), a red three is worth 3 (negative 3). You can go back and forth between adding and subtracting. To help visualize the addition or subtraction, you can use this two-colour counter manipulative

Please go to Flipgrid and enter the code "thompson2019". You will then be asked for an ID, please email or message me and I will give you your personalized id. There is a message from me in there, and hopefully you will share a similar message. I know not everyone is comfortable with sharing and that is okay, you can just watch others at first and hopefully join in the following weeks. We may use this as a way to demonstrate our learning in the coming weeks. If you wish to do so, flipgrid is also an app and can be used that way.
